One question

Toby said you don't get enough credit for having your butt in a pew on Sunday morning. What actually got you out of bed and into church today - or what almost kept you home?

The whole sermon
The Big Idea

God is not waiting for you to get your act together before He's glad you're here - showing up, broken and all, is already the right move.

Central Image

The soccer player who kicks and misses because she's not looking at the ball - it's what we do when we sin, and showing up to practice anyway is the whole point.

The Turn

The sermon assumed people feel guilty or embarrassed for showing up imperfect; Toby flipped it - the problem was never the broken person who showed up, it was always the person who insisted they had nothing to confess.

Outline

The People Who Left

John is writing to a congregation that took a hit - people didn't just drift from church, they quit Jesus altogether, denying that his death covered sin and that he rose as Lord. The ones still there are shaken. John's goal isn't to argue with the ones who left; it's to steady the ones who stayed.

"We Announced This to You"

The announcement - God is light and there is no darkness in him - sounds almost too simple. But Toby made the case that simple is exactly right when someone's confidence has been rattled. You can't hang on to complicated. The announcement is the thread that connects the fellowship; those who walked out walked into the dark.

"If We Say" - Code for the Losers

Toby walked through the rhetorical device John uses: "if we say" is first-century shorthand for "those people over there claim." The folks who left are saying they have no sin, they haven't sinned, they don't need Jesus. Toby had the whole room put their hands down when he asked who has sin - which made John's point visually. The people still in the room are not the crazy ones.

The Blood Covers the Gap

Some people carry guilt in the space between sinning and confessing, as if the blood of Christ clocked out during that window. Toby pushed back on that directly - the cleansing is ongoing, not suspended while you work up the nerve to admit you missed the ball.

You're Here - That's the Thing

The sermon's main move wasn't doctrinal, it was pastoral: Toby spent significant time just affirming the congregation for showing up. The person who stumbled in from a rough Saturday night is not the problem - they are the solution. The problem is the person who walks in claiming they have nothing to confess. Showing up with honest need is exactly what walking in the light looks like.

Three Handles

Toby closed with three plain takeaways: keep your eye on the prize, be real, and get over yourself. The third one came with a story - a mentor who told him, mid-confession, "Toby, it's just sin." The point was that sin is not a surprise to God or to anyone in the room, and the sooner you stop treating it like a scandal, the sooner you can actually deal with it.

The Landing

Receiving communion today was the sermon's landing - not as a kick in the teeth for being broken, but as God's handshake that says He's glad you're here. Toby wanted people to walk out with that settled.

Questions to Think About

  1. Toby said you don't get enough credit for having your butt in a pew on Sunday morning. What actually got you out of bed and into church today - or what almost kept you home?
  2. Toby translated "if we say" as a code phrase for the people who had already walked out. Knowing that, how does the argument John is making in those verses change when you read them?
  3. John keeps the announcement simple on purpose - God is light, there's no darkness in him, full stop. Why would someone whose confidence has been knocked around need simple more than they need complex?
  4. Toby's mentor told him, "Toby, it's just sin" - meaning, stop acting like your sin is somehow a bigger deal than what God already knows how to handle. Is there something you're carrying right now that you've made larger than God's ability to deal with it?
  5. Toby drew a hard line between the person who walked in still shaking off Saturday night and the person who walks in pretending they have no sin. Which posture do you default to - hiding the mess or owning it?
  6. Toby said the people who left hurt the people who stayed - and John is writing partly just to tell the ones who stayed that they're not crazy for staying. Is there someone whose leaving has made you quietly wonder if maybe they were right to go?
  7. Toby said showing up together is part of how you know you're walking in the light - that the fellowship itself is evidence. What does it mean for this church specifically that we keep showing up for each other, especially when it would be easier not to?
  8. Toby gave three handles at the end: keep your eye on the prize, be real, and get over yourself. Pick the one that actually applies to your week right now and tell one person here today which one it is and why.
