One question
Toby said that nobody in Chester is waving Philip Barber's flag today. When have you found yourself rooting for or investing in something that you already knew was going to lose?
The whole sermon
You already belong to the winning side, so live like it - because what keeps you on the right path isn't guilt or fear, it's knowing you're the champion.
Central Image
The Chester girls' volleyball team winning the championship - nobody waves the flag of the team that just lost, and nobody who knows they're on the winning side goes and invests themselves in the losers.
The Turn
We tend to think staying faithful is about being disciplined enough or scared enough to do the right thing - John says it's actually about confidence, and confidence comes from knowing the outcome is already settled.
Outline
We Are the Champions - 1 John 2:12-14
John addresses children, fathers, and young men - but twice he ends the list with young men, and twice he ends with "you have conquered the evil one." That word is Nike, nikao - not "overcome," conquered. John is framing everything that follows inside a victory that has already happened. The reason to do any of this stuff is that you're winners, and this is what winners do.
Don't Wave the Loser's Flag - vv. 15-17
Don't love the world or the things in the world. Toby came back to last week's definition: love is loyalty, not feelings. God will not be one of many loyalties. The world and its desires are passing away - and to illustrate that, Toby walked through the Cabbage Patch doll moment, the Beanie Baby moment, whatever the current equivalent is. When you're loyal to the things of this world, you're the guy betting everything on the horse you already know is going to lose. You're not just making a bad investment - you're setting money on fire.
Antichrist Is Not What You Think - vv. 18-23
The word anti in Greek means "instead of," not "the polar opposite of." An antichrist is not some supervillain equal and opposite to Jesus - it's anyone who offers a substitute for Jesus. In John's specific context, it was people who believed in a Messiah but not in Jesus, most likely Jewish Christians who had walked back to Judaism. John demystifies the word entirely: there are lots of them, they were never really part of the community to begin with, and their leaving just made that plain. The ones who left were summer soldiers - frauds from the start. That's what an antichrist is. That's all it is.
You Already Have It - vv. 20-27
The anointing - Toby's shorthand for the whole package of what you receive in Jesus: the changed interior life, the Holy Spirit, the community of faith, all of it together - that anointing is already yours. Jesus paid your dues. Nobody gets to show up and tell you that you're missing one extra piece, because you've got it all. You don't need a new secret teaching. You need to stand your ground in what you already have.
Stand Your Ground and Look Him in the Eye - v. 28
Abide means stand your ground - that's it. Stand your ground in what you received from the beginning, and God stands his ground in you. The payoff: when Jesus comes back and the victory party happens, you get to look him straight in the eye. Toby unpacked the Greek word for boldness - it was the word for how lawmakers addressed each other as equals, as peers. You look Jesus in the eye. You don't duck, you don't hide, you don't feel ashamed. You're there because you belong there. The person who ran from their post when things got hard doesn't get that. Stand your ground and you do.
The Landing
Don't just hope to be a benchwarmer who gets a ring - live like someone who wants to start on the championship team. Confidence in the victory you already have is what keeps you on the path, so put your whole life on the winner.
Questions to Think About
- Toby said that nobody in Chester is waving Philip Barber's flag today. When have you found yourself rooting for or investing in something that you already knew was going to lose?
- Toby made a point of the word "conquered" - that Bible translators softened it to "overcome" but John meant conquered, like Caesar meant it. What difference does it make to you whether John is saying you overcame the evil one or you conquered him?
- John says the people who left were never really part of the church to begin with - they were, as Toby put it, summer soldiers. What do you think John means by that, and does that hold up?
- Toby said the thing that keeps us on the right path isn't fear or guilt - it's confidence. Where does your motivation to stay faithful actually come from, if you're honest about it?
- The Cabbage Patch doll illustration was about how whatever you think matters most right now will look stupid to someone in a generation. What in your life right now are you most tempted to treat as permanent that probably isn't?
- Toby said love in John is primarily loyalty - not warm feelings, not moral perfection, but loyalty. If that's the right frame, what does your actual loyalty pattern say about what you love?
- Toby ended the prayer asking that the whole body would have its loyalty oriented the same direction so we'd pull together and make each other stronger. What would it look like for this church, specifically, to function like a team that knows it's already won - and are we doing that?
- Pick one thing you are currently investing time, money, or energy in that you already suspect is passing away. This week, do one concrete thing that reflects betting on the winner instead.
