This Sunday
Philippians 4:4-9
Service Time: 10:30
Announcements
Not an announcement, just a note on the translation today. The translation for the sermon today is a little more "dynamic" and less literal than usual, but I wanted to capture the emotion and the warmth of this text that a literal translation (or even a modern dynamic-equivalence translation like the NIV or ESV) doesn't pick up. For reference, here's the full Scripture reference as it will be in the sermon: 4 Rejoice in the Lord — always. I'll say it again: rejoice! 5 Let everybody around you see that you're not somebody who has to have their own way. The Lord is closer than you think. 6 Don't let worry eat you alive — instead, bring everything to God. Ask him. Tell him exactly what you need. And do it with a thankful heart. 7 And the peace of God — a peace that's bigger than anything the human mind could come up with — will stand watch over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Here's the big thing, brothers and sisters: fill your minds with what's true, with what's worth respecting, with what's just, with what's sincerely good, with what's worth loving, with what's worth being said — if something is excellent, if it deserves to be praised — concentrate on that. 9 Whatever you learned from me, whatever you took in, whatever you heard me say, whatever you watched me do — do it. And the God of peace himself will be right there with you.
Sermon Outline
Intro:
- Opening worship led with "My Lighthouse" establishing God as guide and peace in storms.
- Toby reads Hebrews 12 aloud, highlighting present realities: Mount Zion, heavenly assembly, Jesus the mediator, sprinkled blood.
- Brief reflection that the Bible often describes who we are and what we have right now, not only in the past or future.
- Prayer asking God to help the congregation see and receive their present identity in Christ during worship.
What does God's Word say?
- Hebrews 12 text emphasizes current standing: belonging to the city of the living God and being part of the heavenly assembly.
- Key images in the reading: innumerable angels, the assembly of the firstborn, God as judge, Jesus as mediator, and blood that speaks a better word.
- Toby stresses that these are present realities to be embraced now, not only promises for later.
God's Word applies today:
- Worship songs reinforce practical responses: praise in valley and mountaintop, praise as weapon in spiritual struggle, joy in the house of the Lord.
- Invitation to receive identity now—live as those forgiven, accepted, and redeemed (from "we were the beggars now we're royalty").
- Call to open our eyes to where we stand in Christ in daily life—let that shape prayer, praise, and how we face doubt, failure, and fear.
Reflection Questions
1. Toby began by reading Hebrews 12 and saying we already stand in Mount Zion and the city of the living God; how does thinking of your present identity as "already" change the way you approach worship or prayer this week? 2. Which image from the songs this morning—lighthouse, praise as a weapon, joy in the house of the Lord, or "a mighty fortress"—most connects with how you feel right now, and why? 3. When Toby said the Bible often points to realities we have right now, what is one truth from Scripture you need to receive and act like it is true today? 4. The congregation sang that praise is effective even in doubt and trouble; what would it look like for you to use praise as a first response the next time anxiety or fear shows up? 5. Hebrews 12 mentions Jesus as mediator and the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word; how does that specific language help you understand God's presence with you in weakness or failure? 6. Which part of "we were the beggars, now we're royalty" feels hardest to believe about yourself, and what is one step you could take to begin living toward that reality? 7. Toby invited us to "open up our eyes to see" where we stand in Christ—what practical habit might help you notice and remember that identity throughout your week? 8. After hearing the songs and the reading, what is one concrete change in attitude or action you want to bring into your family, work, or rest this week?
